Fleas

1-2mm small dark brown external parasites that infest the coat of your pet, biting the skin and feeding on your pet’s blood. They cause local irritation and if swallowed can cause tapeworm in your pet.

Ticks

3-5mm small 8-legged external parasites that infest the coat of your pet, biting the skin and feeding on your pet’s bloods. There are many types of ticks. The ticks of concern in Australia are the brown dog tick and the paralysis tick. The paralysis tick can cause paralysis to your pet which is life threatening and requires immediate veterinary treatment.

Mites

Very small 8-legged external parasites, usually invisible to the naked eye. They infest your pet’s skin and feed on their blood. They cause extreme irritation and can cause hair loss.

Heartworm

A parasitic worm that can infect your pet through a mosquito bite. When an infected mosquito bites your pet a larval stage of heartworm is injected under your pet’s skin and then travels through the blood system to the heart where it matures into an adult worm. Heartworm causes heart failure and lung disease.

Intestinal Worms

There are 4 types of common intestinal worms in our pets, roundworm, hookworm, whipworm and tapeworm. The route of infection, life cycle and severity of symptoms vary amongst the different worms, however they all strip nutrients and/or suck blood from our pets, posing health risks.

Tapeworms

One of the 4 common intestinal worms of our pets. They are long flat segmented parasites that bite the intestinal wall and feed on nutrients as food is digested. The common ones in our pets are flea tapeworm, zipper worm and echinococcus. Echinococcus has a zoonotic risk and can cause health related issues in humans.
